How to Calculate Reseller Profit Before You Buy

The easiest time to protect your reseller profit is before you buy the item.

A lot of resellers know the purchase price and expected sale price, but the real decision gets clearer when you also estimate marketplace fees, shipping, supplies and your minimum acceptable return.

Start with projected net profit

A simple planning formula is:

Projected net profit = expected sale price − buy cost − marketplace fees − shipping − other selling costs.

Example: you expect an item to sell for $65. You can buy it for $20, expect $8 in shipping, $1 in other costs and $6 in selling fees. Your projected net profit is $30.

Check ROI, not just dollars

A $30 projected profit can be great or weak depending on how much cash you had to tie up. ROI helps compare opportunities of different sizes:

ROI = projected net profit ÷ buy cost × 100.

In the example above, $30 of projected profit on a $20 buy cost is 150% projected ROI.

Check margin too

Profit margin tells you how much of the sale price remains after the modeled costs:

Margin = projected net profit ÷ expected sale price × 100.

Using more than one metric matters because a deal can have a high ROI but only a small dollar profit, or a decent dollar profit but require too much capital.

Know the break-even price

Break-even price is the sale price where modeled profit reaches zero. Knowing it gives you a quick reality check when you are sourcing. If the likely market price is uncomfortably close to break-even, the deal has very little room for mistakes, returns or price drops.

Use a maximum buy price

Instead of asking “Can I make money on this?”, ask “What is the most I can pay and still hit my target?” A maximum buy price turns your profit goal into a sourcing rule.

The A1 Resell Signal Buy / Pass Calculator is built for this exact decision. Enter your expected sale price, shipping, fee assumptions and target profit, ROI and margin. It calculates projected profit, break-even and a recommended maximum buy price.

If you also want to track what happens after the buy—inventory age, sales, expenses, mileage and actual profit—the A1 Resell Signal Decision System adds the full operating workflow.

Planning estimates are only as good as the inputs you use. Marketplace fees and selling conditions change, so verify current fees and realistic sold prices before buying.
