How to Set a Maximum Buy Price for Resale Items

A maximum buy price is the highest amount you can pay for an item while still meeting your own reseller targets.

It is useful because the sourcing decision happens before the final sale price, fees and shipping are known with certainty. A max-buy rule gives you a disciplined ceiling instead of relying on excitement or a rough mental calculation.

Start with the expected sale price

Use realistic sold-market evidence, not the highest active listing you can find. Then estimate selling fees, shipping and other direct costs.

Set a minimum profit target

If you require at least $20 in projected profit, your maximum buy price must leave $20 after the expected selling costs.

For example, if the expected sale price is $80 and you estimate $15 in fees, shipping and other costs, the theoretical maximum buy price based only on a $20 profit target is $45.

Add an ROI target

Dollar profit alone does not tell you whether the capital is being used efficiently. A reseller who wants 100% ROI would need the projected profit to equal the buy cost.

That can create a lower maximum buy price than the minimum-profit rule.

Add a margin target

Margin gives you a third guardrail. It tells you how much of the expected sale price remains as profit after modeled costs.

Use the strictest limit

If your profit goal says you can pay $45, your ROI goal says $32 and your margin goal says $36, the safest max-buy ceiling is generally the lowest of those limits: $32.

That is the logic behind the A1 Resell Signal Buy / Pass Calculator. It calculates separate maximum buy prices for profit, ROI and margin targets, then turns the result into a simple BUY / REVIEW / PASS sourcing signal.

Remember that it is a planning number

A maximum buy price is not a guarantee. Actual sale price, fees, returns, shipping and time-to-sell can differ from the estimate. The goal is to make your sourcing process more consistent and transparent.

For resellers who want to carry that decision into inventory and post-sale tracking, the A1 Resell Signal Decision System adds inventory, expenses, mileage, dashboard and actual-profit tracking.
